Night racing returns at Moonee Valley this Friday evening where it is Australia Stakes Night. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out three metres for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (18:30) Happy Birthday Pat Egan Plate 1000m

Back Me

Really keen to see what 3 Hulk (Bet Now: $5.00) does here. This is a son of I Am Invincible on debut for the Darren Weir stable, and we know the stable has had a pretty good run with their juveniles. This bloke comes here off the back of a sharp jumpout win at Ballarat, where he led all the way and ran good time. Was niggled, but responded, seemed to do everything right and was sharp to the eye. Confident he can measure up.

Danger

1 Auxin (Bet Now: $4.60) is a James Cummings trained colt who looked to trial up really well down the Flemington straight prior to debuting at that course where he got back, found the best part of the track out wide and finished off strongly to run a close up third to stablemate Microphone. Looks an above average youngster and he should improve big time off the debut.

Long Shot

5 Beach Club (Bet Now: $21.00) is a daughter of Zoffany on debut for Archie Alexander. This girl is bred to be okay over a tad further, but looked to show enough zip in a recent jump out to suggest she’ll be alright as a juvenile. Whether she’s good enough to beat these remains to be seen, but the stable/jockey combination should always be respected when it comes an unknown horse.

Race 2. (19:00) MSC Signs Summer Stayers Series Heat 1 (78) 2500m

Back Me

3 The Gatting Ball (Bet Now: $3.20) does look one of the safer options in a tricky staying contest. This bloke has been in work forever it seems for Darren Weir, but as we know with the stable, they can remain in work for months and continue to race at a decent level, this bloke no exception. He ran over 2400m at Caulfield last time and stuck to the task strongly when second to Prince Hlodowig. Run prior at this track/distance was a beauty and that race carried more depth than what he faces here. Like him.

Danger

This is one of the easier races that 1 Top Of The Range (Bet Now: $3.50) has contested in some time. He ran at Caulfield last time and battled away well in defeat without really threatening when fifth to the in form Lamborghini. Really well in at the weights after the claim and he should get run of the race stuff from the inside gate and is a clear threat at his best.

Long Shot

5 San Remo (Bet Now: $6.50) is an Archie Alexander trained stayer who is going quite well. Bolted up three back at Cranbourne before being a flop next start the Bool. Returned to Cranbourne and beat all bar Benall in real slog to the line. Has run well at the Valley, probably leads and if he can get a cheap furlong or two, he’ll take some running down.

Race 3. (19:30) VOBIS Gold Carat 1200m

Back Me

Can 1 Hawkshot (Bet Now: $5.00) go on with the job and fulfill the promise? Burned a few holes in my pocket in two runs to start the prep but he patched those holes up last Wednesday at Sandown, doing everything wrong in the run but still savaging the line and proving too good for his rivals. I think the 1200m at the Valley is a little query because at 1200m last time, he pulled his head off and almost threw the race away. Hopefully the tempo is genuine.

Danger

8 Rich Itch (Bet Now: $7.00) is a fascinating runner. Still a maiden for Shawn Mathrick but has shown above average ability in his short career to date. The two maidens he contested in the Spring, on debut the winner was a blacktype performer, and at start two, the winner is city performed. Recent Cranbourne jumpout was electric and he appears ready to rock and roll.

Long Shot

6 Spare Change (Bet Now: $16.00) is a progressive son of Reward For Effort trained by Shane Stockdale. He has won two of his four career outings, the latest coming at Pakenham over 1200m when getting the 1/1 sit before angling clear on the turn and finishing off strongly to get the job done. Did he beat much? Probably not, but the manner in which he did it certainly says he deserves a crack in town.

Race 4. (20:00) DraftKings.com Sprint Series Heat 1 (70) 1000m

Back Me

I’ll take a chance on 6 Private Lounge (Bet Now: $4.40). Best horse in the race by an absolute mile but it’s just a matter of where she is at fitness wise. hasn’t raced since Kyneton Cup Day last year when trouncing her rivals over 1200m by five lengths in sharp time. I’ve gone back to November 19 looking for a jumpout for her but can’t find so she’s an unknown but ability wise, clearly the one to beat.

Danger

4 Our Gladiator (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Jerome Hunter trained mare who should land on speed and prove a tough nut to get past. Ran at Cranbourne last time where she copped pressure near the speed and for mine she did a really good to stick on like she did when third to Kyzamba, who had the suck run in behind and had last look. Is a winner here, should lead and give her all.

Long Shot

9 The Mayor (Bet Now: $16.00) is a Logan McGill trained son of Danerich resuming. This four year old hasn’t raced since August 11 at Moe when down the track behind Nariko, who has since been a city winner and placed at blacktype level, so that form clearly reads well, he can sprint well fresh and his recent jumpout looked pretty good to the eye. One to include in multiples.

Race 5. (20:30) Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge Heat 10 (78) 955m

Back Me

Hoping that sustained speed comes to the fore via 6 Girls Got Spirit (Bet Now: $7.50), who resumes for Team Corstens. She’s a very speedy mare who hasn’t raced since May 19 when bungling the start over 900m at the Gold Coast but class got her home and she came away for a dominant win. 900-1000m seems her distance range and as you’d expect, she’s looked sharp at the jumpouts.

Danger

5 Freeze Over (Bet Now: $3.10) is an Ellerton/Zahra trained mare who hasn’t raced in just under a month since racing over the 1000m here where she landed near the speed in a good spot and looked to travel well but couldn’t quite finish it off and Crack The Code was impressive in winning, so that form reads alright for mine and she is better suited back to this level and back at this kind of race.

Long Shot

8 Caribbean Pearl (Bet Now: $10.00) will likely be last in the run but she’ll be steaming at the end given the likely brutal tempo in front. Ran over 1000m here last time and stuck to the task pretty well when fourth to the impressive Crack The Code. I think back to the short course will suit her…she’ll spot them a start but will be strong at the end provided she’s not run off her legs.

Race 6. () Chandler Macleod Martin Ralston Cup (70) 1600m

Back Me

Want to give 8 Surprise Baby (Bet Now: $17.00) another chance. First two starts/wins for the career were outstanding before going to Stawell where he got a mile back in the run and given they’ve run home in near sub 34, he would have had to run sub 33 to win. No chance. Tempo should be genuine this time around, and if he’s close enough on the turn, he’s certainly good enough.

Danger

I’m hoping 10 Aberro (Bet Now: $8.00) can go on with this time in. He has promised so much throughout his career, promising to be a blacktype horse but he’s just been stuck in benchmark grade and hasn’t really gone on with it. Resumed at Geelong where he was given a lovely steer by Ethan Brown and proved too good for his rivals, just. He’s got class on his side and upside. Happy to give him a chance in town again.

Long Shot

13 Diamond Bow (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Wendy Kelly trained mare who is ticking over quite nicely. She ran over 1800m at Sandown last time where she was off the speed throughout before being presented clear air on the turn and letting down strongly in the straight but was nabbed near the peg by Shaq. Right down in the weights and can definitely win this.

Race 7. () Australia Stakes 1200m

Back Me

I think 4 Malaguerra (Bet Now: $7.00) at his best looks the winner. Peter Gelagotis trains this high class sprinter, who is back after a two run Spring prep, which included a strong third in the Winterbottom behind Voodoo Lad after sitting wide throughout. Won this race last year and appears on track to repeat the dose off the back of a really sharp jumpout win at Cranbourne, leading all the way under a good hold. Happy to be in his corner.

Danger

5 Land Of Plenty (Bet Now: $5.00) is a high quality galloper for Darren Weir that resumes. He had an awesome Spring campaign, highlighted by a dominant win and a well deserved Group l triumph in the Toorak. Potentially on the All Star Mile path, jumped out well at Camperdown on Monday and can sprint well fresh, plus he has a handy record at the Valley.

Long Shot

3 Fell Swoop (Bet Now: $7.50) is the hard fit/in form animal who could pinch this if he gets conditions to suit. Dominant win two back in the Razor Sharp before going to the Christmas Classic where he ran well but was no match for the class and brilliance of Alizee. Has run well at the Valley in the past and does seem to be in a really good frame of mind, with race fitness on his side.

Race 8. () Mary Walker Memorial Summer Sprint Series Heat 2 (70) 1200m

Back Me

One of the more fascinating runners on the program is 9 Greyworm (Bet Now: $2.70), formerly with Mick Kent but is now under the care of Team Hawkes. He showed really good promise in his first prep during the Winter, winning 2/3 starts, the latest seeing him bolt up at Sandown. Now with the Hawkes camp and his two Flemington jumpouts have been sharp to the eye. Confident he can measure up.

Danger

5 Absolute (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Darren Weir galloper having his first run for the stable. Was formerly with James Cummings so it’ll be interesting to see how he goes. Certainly good enough to beat these if he’s right. Just a tricky draw to overcome but can sprint well fresh and the recent jumpout was more than encouraging to the eye. Definite chance at his best.

Long Shot

1 Blue Tycoon (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Hayes/Dabernig trained galloper who should do no work from the inside gate. Four weeks between runs since racing at Randwick where he was near the speed and battled away okay in defeat behind the in form Deprive. Depth clearly not as strong, should get a soft trip from the barrier…probably needs a bit of luck to win though.

BEST BET: Race Seven Number 4 Malaguerra

NEXT BEST: Race One Number 3 Hulk

LONG SHOT: Race Six Number 8 Surprise Baby
