After a three-day break, Irish action resumes in Clonmel and Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore might strike with Daybreak Boy in the featured Munster Hurdle.

A classy flat performer (reached a career-high mark of 99 and currently rated 93), this six-year-old was placed twice over timber before opening his account, at the fifth attempt, at Navan in September, when outpointing subsequent winner Hyperdrive and 22 other rivals.

In his only subsequent outing, he contested the Grade 3 For Auction Novice Hurdle, also at Navan, in November.

Then, he failed to trouble the main protagonists in the closing stages but finished nine lengths sixth behind Aramon in a race from which both the winner and his stable-companion Quick Grabim have emerged to triumph at Grade 1 level.

Today, Daybreak Boy faces more experienced but less formidable opposition, including Wishmoor and Wounded Warrior, which are reverting to hurdling after disappointments over bigger obstacles, plus Epswell and Count Simon, representing the Mullins and Elliott teams respectively. But Daybreak Boy is the one to beat.

Once-raced French import Dento Des Obeaux, representing Willie Mullins and Paul Townend, will be the centre of attention in the Monroe Maiden Hurdle, when the market should prove a guide to his prospects.

But the McManus-owned The Long Mile, trained by Philip Dempsey and a definite eye-catcher when fifth to Sunday’s Grade 1 winner Battleoverdoyen at Navan last month, looks a definite threat.
