Santa Anita Park, Race 1, 3:30 p.m. ET

#6 Operandi: Lots of positive signs with this filly who will make her first start for trainer Steve Knapp (20 percent first off the claim). Knapp has already struck with a few winners to kick off the winter at Santa Anita. Often, you can point to success on the downhill turf course at Santa Anita as a more important variable than class, and I think that’s the case here with Operandi. There are others in the Saturday opener who’ve been in against tougher recently but Operandi has been as consistent as they come — hitting the board in eight of her last nine — and ran her two best races of her career going downhill here at Santa Anita. Additionally, the best turf rider on the circuit, Flavien Prat, stays aboard for her 2019 debut.

Santa Anita Park, Race 5, 5:30 p.m. ET

#2 Banze No Oeste: In lower-level claiming races, like this one on the dirt, I’m always drawn to horses with speed and those that have had success at the track and distance. Banze No Oeste checks all of the boxes in this race. Without having intended to do it, we’ve landed on another Steve Knapp-Flavien Prat horse. This one has also been in great form and has also done his best work at Santa Anita, including a win last out (against a slightly softer field) and a half-length loss at this level back in October. As mentioned, he’s got speed and should be able to get position from his inside draw. Go Ghetto (#7) might show some speed to his outside while stretching back out, but if Banze No Oeste can keep that one at bay early, he should have plenty in reserve to kick clear late.

Strategy on a $10 Budget

$2 win, place, show on #2 Banze No Oeste ($6)
