ED Dunlop is hoping Red can deliver an Amazing performance in the Ebor at York next month.
Amazing Red was sent off the well-backed 11-2 second favourite for the Northumberland Plate last weekend – but he flopped badly in tenth spot.
That was his second disappointing run on the all-weather at Newcastle, having also finished sixth in a handicap at the track in March.
Dunlop is blaming his latest poor effort on the Tapeta surface and he is keen to stick to turf with the horse in future.
The Newmarket trainer has earmarked the JLT Cup, a new two-mile race at Newbury on July 21, as a potential stepping stone to the £500,000 Ebor at York on August 25.
Dunlop said: “We have taken him there (Newcastle) twice now and he has run badly there twice.
“We went there full of hope, but he never turned up.
“I’m not saying we would have ever beaten the winner Withhold, but he never really travelled and any horse out the back never got into the race.
“I don’t think we will run him on the Tapeta again.
“We can just put a line through it.
“We will consider the new race at Newbury or we could just freshen him up and wait for the Ebor.
“He seems well in the paddock and nothing untoward has happened to him.”
