Jockey Florent Geroux and owner Sol Kumin celebrate Monomoy Girl’s Kentucky Oaks victory
Thoroughbred owner Sol Kumin did not make the ballot for last year’s Eclipse Awards, but voters may be unable to ignore the involvement of his various partnerships in 2018. Thus far, Kumin owns Kentucky Derby winner Justify (and also third and fifth-place finishers Audible and My Boy Jack), Kentucky Oaks winner Monomoy Girl, Dubai Golden Shaheen winner Mind Your Biscuits, and G1 performer Beach Patrol.
Part of the issue that kept him out of Eclipse Award consideration last year is that Kumin races under the names of several different partnerships.
Bob Ehalt opined on the owner’s status at thoroughbredracing.com: “As much as it’s a statistical nightmare to compile all Kumin’s wins and accomplishments in his myriad of partnerships, (…) there also no way that they should be ignored. Like any owner, Kumin took a gamble in buying into all those horses and there are certainly plenty of horses who did not work out as well as those G1 winners.
“For years, the Eclipse Award has gone to the connections of one horse or a large stable, but people like Kumin, who are great for the game, are changing that.”
