Santa Anita Park is offering a pair of graded events on Saturday, Dec. 29. Let’s see if we can make some money on the Grade 3, $150,000 Robert J. Frankel Stakes and the Grade 1, $300,000 and American Oaks.
Robert J. Frankel Stakes, Race 4
For fillies and mares 3-years-old and up, 1 1/8 miles (turf)
Post time, 4:34 p.m. ET
#4 Fahan Mura (5-2) likes this turf course (6:5-1-0) and will takes them as far as she can under Edwin Maldonado. The nine furlong distance might trip her up.

#2 Escape Clause (7-2) is an 18-for-26 win type exiting back-to-back solid efforts vs. turf route stakes rivals at Del Mar. She figures to stalk the pace under Ruben Fuentes.
#8 Excellent Sunset (7-2) can compete here if she handles the added real estate. She was overmatched in the Matriarch (G1) last time and had her number taken down in the restricted Kathryn Crosby Nov. 9. Her speed figures are on the rise and Rafael Bejarano knows her now.
#3 Quebec (8-1) finished less than a length behind Fahan Mura in a local flat mile restricted stakes affair Oct. 7. She removes blinkers and attracts Joel Rosario.
#5 Sweet Charity (5-1) typically comes with a nice late run and frequently finishes in the top three. She landed the show in the Santa Ana (G2) at this course and distance last year.
#1 Lucy De (8-1) lands the cozy rail and gets the services of Flavien Prat. She owns a trio of local turf wins but has not had any luck in three starts at this distance. She can grab a share of the purse on her best day.
#6 Gliding By (12-1) finished 4th in this event last year and the best she can hope for is a similar finish. Drayden Van Dyke hops aboard and she seems most effective up to a mile.
#7 Amboseli (8-1) is a purse nibbler exiting a good 2nd in the Cardinal Handicap (G3) at Churchill Downs on yielding ground. She has lost her last fifteen races.

American Oaks, Race 8
For fillies 3-years-old, 1 1/4 miles (turf)
Post time, 6:34 p.m. ET
#9 Californiagoldrush (5-2) got a great ride as my top choice in the Sands Point (G2) at Belmont Park Sept. 15. She is 2-for-2 at Santa Anita and Flavien Prat was aboard for all three of her wins. She figures to attend tepid early fractions.

#6 Paved (3-1) loses Joel Rosario to Competitionofideas but today’s rider Drayden Van Dyke was aboard for her first two career victories. She is back with 3-year-old filly friends and she split quality runners Vasilika and Cambodia at this course and distance Sept. 29.
#8 Competitionofideas (4-1) owns running style versatility and Joel Rosario got to know her in a rallying show finish on the main track at Aqueduct Nov. 22. She graduated by 8+ lengths on turf Sept. 7 (blinkers on) and followed that up with a late running turf route score at that same venue Oct. 21. Chad Brown’s improving filly will probably stalk the pace today.
#2 Colonia (6-1) exits a nice late running score in the Valley View (G3) at Keeneland. She figures to enjoy today’s added ground but the lack of pace hurts her chances. Joe Bravo rides her well.
#7 Retro (30-1) adds blinkers after a troubled 4th in her Del Mar return Nov. 16. She has been an underachiever after six starts but figures to attend the pace and might surprise.
#1 Kodiak West has scratched.
#3 K P Pergoliscious (20-1) should be able to handle ten furlongs but this class level is probably too tough for her. She will try to get involved late under Tyler Baze.
#4 Amandine (4-1) smartly captured the Lady Shamrock Stakes at Santa Anita on Dec. 26 and I would be surprised if she wheeled back on the third day of the winter meet. If she does run she figures to stalk slow fractions.
#5 Princess Warrior (6-1) lacks early speed but figures to enjoy today’s added real estate. She exits a late running win in the Mrs. Revere (G2) at Churchill Downs on yielding ground.
