ARGUABLY the best betting race of the day isn’t run at Goodwood this afternoon but at Galway this evening with the running of the Galway Plate (7.20pm).
Even though we are right in the heart of the Flat season, National Hunt racing takes centre stage tonight with some well-known jumpers strutting their stuff.
The likes of Sub Lieutenant, Valseur Lido, Snow Falcon, Ballycasey, Clarcam and Rock The World add plenty of quality to the 2m6f chase which seems to grow in stature each year.
The market is headed by Willie Mullins’ Patricks Park who currently sits as first reserve but I’d imagine will have made the starting 22 come race time.
He lived up to some of the hype when winning at the Punchestown Festival on his last start back in April, but this will require a lot more from an 8lb higher mark.
I like the look of Gordon Elliott’s JURY DUTY available at 12/1 with Grand National-winning jockey Davy Russell in the saddle.
Last November he won a Grade Two Novices’ Chase at Punchestown where he had a future pair of Grade One winners in behind him in Shattered Love and Presenting Percy.
He was then stepped up in trip by his trainer where he failed to win again in four starts including when unseating in the four-miler at the Cheltenham Festival.
It could well be that he is better suited to this slightly shorter trip and I’m prepared to take a chance on him with the genius that is Davy Russell in the saddle.
I can see Peregrine Run going well after his recent pipe-opener on the Flat, while Snow Falcon looks thrown in at the weights if returning to form.
