IT’S the calm before the storm on ITV this weekend with Sandown over jumps and Wolverhampton on the Flat – then, of course, it’s all about Cheltenham next week with the Festival kicking off on Tuesday.
The action on ITV kicks off at 1.50pm with a Grade 3 novices’ handicap hurdle over nearly 2m4f. It’s a really open event, but I’ll have a few quid each-way on FIRST ASSIGNMENT for Ian Williams.
He’s up nearly 10lb for a narrow success at Huntingdon last time. But he’s proven at the trip and he’s improving so might well hit the frame at big odds.
The 2.25pm is the big handicap of the day, the Grade 3 Imperial Cup over nearly 2m. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT has a first-time visor for the shrewd Pipe team and he’ll do for me. He wasn’t beaten far by Le Patriote last time and that is good handicap form. The drop back in trip might well be in his favour.
The 3.00pm at Sandown is a Listed bumper over nearly 2m. A bit of guess work here, but hopefully URCA DE LIMA will run well for Anthony Honeyball. She scored nicely on her debut and the runner-up has been consistent in defeat since. I’m sure there is more to come although hard to be adamant here
Finally at Sandown, there is a handicap chase over an extended 3m at 3.35pm. Just seven runners, and I’m going for the fairytale result with PETE THE FEAT. He just loves Sandown, and even though he’s 14, he could just role back the years for Charlie Longsdon.
Matt Chapman’s TV Tips
Sandown 1.50 – First Assignment: ‘Up 10lbs for a narrow success at Huntingdon but he’s improving so could hit the frame at big odds’ (add to your betslip)
Wolverhampton 2.05 – Mr Scaramanga: ‘Probably a bit high in the handicap, but in good form’ (add to your betslip)
Sandown 2.25 – Friday Night Light: ‘Visored first time for shrewd Pipe yard and holds good handicap form’ (add to your betslip)
Sandown 3.00 – Urca De Lima: ‘Hard to be too confident but she scored nicely on her debut’ (add to your betslip)
Wolverhampton 3.15 – Second Thought: ‘Rated 107 and should take all the beating’ (add to your betslip)
Sandown 3.35 – Pete The Feat: ’14-year-old can defy his age around course he loves’ (add to your betslip)
On the Flat at Wolverhampton, there is a Lincoln trial at 2.05pm over an extended mile. MR SCARAMANGA is probably a bit high in the handicap, but in good form. He can go well for Tom Marquand from a good draw.
There’s a Listed event over an extended 7f at 3.15pm, and Haggas and Moore should also take this with SECOND THOUGHT. The selection is rated 107 and from a reasonable draw, he should take all the beating.
So best of luck and let’s hope for some Yeeehaaas. You Betcha.
