A visitation is scheduled for Friday in St. Paul, Minn., for jockey Mike Ziegler, who passed away Nov. 13.
Affectionately known as “Ziggy” by family and friends, the Minnesota native began his racing career at Canterbury Park as a hot walker. He rode his first race two years later at Erie Downs in Pennsylvania. Ziegler spent most of his career in the Midwest and Southwest, riding in Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. He was most recently riding at Remington Park.
During his career, Ziegler had 19,261 mounts with 2,502 victories and nearly $20 million in earnings. Aboard a gelding named Get Happy Mister, Ziegler won all nine races they rode together. Ziegler won his 2,500th winner earlier this year.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie; children, Krys and Evan Allen of St. Paul, and Shelby Ziegler, Bailey Ziegler and Nick Ziegler, all of Lincoln, Neb.
