The 1933 Kentucky Derby finish battle between Head Play and Broker’s Tip proved to be one for the ages, as well as a one-of-a-kind photograph.
Oddsmaker Mike Battaglia offers his free picks and tips for Wednesday’s races at Keeneland. First post is at 1:05 p.m.
RESONATE comes off of a runner-up effort at this level and rates the edge for Tim Glyshaw with hot rider Florent Geroux aboard. FASHION ENVY drops in class, and Corey Lanerie picks up the mount. VALIANT REASON was well beaten by the top pick last out but she had to need that race after a four-month layoff and figures to improve.
MRS ROCCO has never been around two turns but has good early speed and should get a good trip from the inside post. She could be tough to catch for the meet’s leading jockey and trainer. LUCKY MOVE looked good breaking her maiden last out for Mark Casse and is the one to beat. JEMROSE didn’t like the poly at Turfway and figures to improve on the move back to dirt.
Wesley Ward has been almost unbeatable in the 2-year-old races this spring and has two more entered in here. ABYSSINIAN is a filly taking on the boys and STAGE LEFT is ridden by Albin Jimenez who has won with four of his five mounts for Ward. INDA ZONE ran this in his debut and is capable of another solid effort.
BENGALA has been off since September and makes her U.S. debut for Christophe Clement. She finished a close up fifth in a Group 3 back in June and the winner of that race won her U.S. debut here last Wednesday for Chad Brown. Give her the slight edge with Julien Leparoux up. SECEDE is also trained by Clement. She should like the added distance and has the tactical speed to be in contention throughout. SHEZAPRADO has won mainly claiming races but she did finish third in small stakes race last out and she also should handle the added distance.
WHAT WHAT WHAT was claimed last out by Ingrid Mason who has good numbers with her firs claims. She gets in light with apprentice Edgar Morales who has looked good on his limited number of mounts this meet. PROM THEME ran second at this level last out and is the one to beat. RADIANTRITHYM rates a chance.
PROFITEER was third behind Frostmourn who was just nosed out for third in the Grade 1 Makers 46 Mile last Friday. A repeat of that performance would make him a winner for Claude McGaughey and Jose Ortiz. DOT MATRIX has shown big improvement since moving to the barn of Brad Cox and is the one to beat. ZULU ALPHA ran a big race at odds of 91-1 last out and is a contender.
CAMPIONI came from off of the pace to win last out and should like today’s added distance. He rates the slight edge in what looks like a well matched claiming test. PADDOCK CRASHER has the benefit of a race over this track and looks dangerous. SOMETHING BIRD fits with these.
BRIELLE’S APPEAL looked good winning her four year old debut for Al Stall. She has the speed to be on or near the lead and appears to be in a good spot to make it two in a row with Shaun Bridgmohan back aboard. GOLDEN AMBER is another solid runner from the leading barn of Brad Cox. She figures to be the main competition. MAY LILY will be running at the end.
