Reckon you’ve had a bad year on the punt? Well we’ve found 10 ill-informed mad-men that are sure to provide some satisfying relief from perhaps a slight error in judgment within the last 12 months. This year has seen a casual Friday night at the Valley result in the a substantial loss for one punter, while perhaps the worst place bet of all time was put on during Queensland’s Winter Carnival.

We have tracked down a replay for each race to put yourself in the unfortunate punter’s shoes. Sit back, relax and enjoy our Top 10 worst bets of 2018!

10. Trapeze Artist – $30,000 @ $5.00 (TAB)

Dragged through the mud with 61 kg and put in a massive effort to finish 3rd before he was outgunned by Santa Ana Lane and Shoals next start. Though displaying a massive effort, he was never going to catch Redzel in the Everest.

9. US Navy Flag – $30,000 @ $8.00 (TAB)

Oh no. Didn’t handle the ground in the Everest and punters were quick to forgive. His overseas form warranted a big performance in the Manikato Stakes however was just never in it.

8. US Navy Flag – $30,000 @ $7.00 (TAB)

The same bet, only this one was slightly worse because they took unders. Whoops.

7. Redzel – $32,000 @ $3.00 (Sportsbet)

The criminal. In fact a serial offender in 2018 with some big betters putting all their confidence in the 2-time Everest winner. $32,000 was placed on him to win the VRC Sprint Classic during the Spring Carnival, however he just couldn’t dictate and was well beaten. $32,000 also seems an odd amount of money, I probably wouldn’t go for a beer with this person.

6. Written By – $40,000 @ $4.00 (TAB)

Well clearly the script for the day wasn’t written by this punter, it went horribly wrong. After recording back-to-back wins and coming off a 1.25L demolition job in the Group 3 Blue Sapphire, Written By just couldn’t outlast Sunlight down the drag car track at Flemington in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes.

5. Pleasuring – $40,000 @ $2.00 (TAB)

Most people would be flat out having their first beer by the time race 2 at The Valley jumped on Manikato Stakes night, this TAB customer must’ve got a bit carried away after his first one and decided to launch into the Weir odds-on pop. Back Weir drink beer to drown your sorrows champion.

4. Benbatl – $45,000 @ $10.00 (Sportsbet)

Should be number 1. On what planet was Benbatl going to beat Winx. Let’s relive her 4th straight Cox Plate win.

3. Redzel – $50,000 @ $1.80 (Sportsbet)

Not again. A usually dominant first-up Redzel left this Sportsbet customer 50 big boys out of pocket, run down late by a flying Redkirk Warrior at Flemington. It was the classy sprinter’s first start since winning the Darley Classic at the same track at the end of 2017.

2. Redzel – $150,000 place only @ $1.23 (TAB)

‘Tactical punting’ gone wrong, what are the chances of running 4th when you put a place bet on? 9 times out of 10 according to the vast majority of hard done by punters. This is reckless bet.

1. Yucatan – $150,000 each way @ $6.00/2.25 (TAB)

If I had a spare $300,000 I probably wouldn’t gamble it on the hardest sporting event to pick the outcome on the planet the Melbourne Cup. Terrible watch for favourite backers non-the-less. This thrill seeker hasn’t gone home empty handed however, their thoughtless and irresponsible behaviour earning them the number 1 position on our Top 10 worst bets of 2018.
