Despite slipping out of the gate and never entering contention in the Sham Stakes, beaten favorite Coliseum remains one of the top betting choices in William Hill U.S.’ future odds for the 2019 Kentucky Derby.
Updated prices provided Sunday evening by William Hill U.S. show Bob Baffert trainees holding the Top 3 spots: Game Winner (5-1) off his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile win, Improbable (8-1) with his Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity score and Coliseum (8-1), who’s 1-for-2 after crossing the wire sixth in the Sham.
Coliseum actually dropped in price from 10-1 to 8-1 over the weekend, with the Vegas Stats & Information Network’s Ron Flatter reporting a big wager had rolled in ahead of Saturday’s race at Santa Anita Park. The Godolphin homebred Coliseum had proven talented with his 6 3/4-length debut win but continued to prove a handful in training, as sons of Tapit are wont to do.
Behind the Baffert trio are two more from the West Coast. Instagrand (10-1) is unbeaten in two starts but un-raced since August. He’s back to working out regularly toward a 3-year-old debut. Gunmetal Gray (12-1) meanwhile has campaigned consistently through the fall and winter, seeing his odds plummet from 60-1 by way of his rallying victory in the Sham.
Unbeaten Remsen Stakes winner Maximus Mischief (15-1) and another talented maiden winner Roadster (20-1) round out the top choices.
The weekend’s other big winner, Mucho Macho Man Stakes hero Mihos, dropped from 150-1 to 40-1 with his score going a on-turn mile at Gulfstream Park. Going back to last week, the Jerome Stakes winner Mind Control lowered 20 points, returning to his 60-1 opening price at William Hill U.S.
