15:05 King Edward VII – Old Persian
Godolphin are riding the crest of a wave right now and it is mostly down to Charlie Appleby, who hit the mark with Blue Point in the King’s Stand on day one here. He’s got another firm contender in this Group 2 with OLD PERSIAN, winner of four from seven starts so far and out of the money only once. The Dubawi colt is improving steadily this season, winning in Listed company at Newmarket last month over 1m2f. He left the impression there would be more to come and is stepped up in distance here. He can floor the triple-threat of Ballydoyle contenders and give William Buick successive wins in the King Edward at decent odds of 5/1.
15:40 Commonwealth Cup – Sands Of Mali
A fiercely competitive renewal of this Group 1 sprint ensures plenty of luck in running may be needed and on that basis it might pay to keep things simple. Richard Fahey’s SANDS OF MALI is sure to be aimed at a prominent position in running and he’s an improving sprinter fully meriting a cut at Group 1 honours. He’s won both starts this term and the way he repelled the sustained challenge of Invincible Army to win the Sandy Lane at Haydock was admirable. The trainer thinks plenty of this colt and has pinpointed him as the big chance of Group 1 success this week. At odds of 8/1, SANDS OF MALI is expected to go close.
17:00 Sandringham – Di Fede
Ralph Beckett’s daughter of Shamardal showed some good form in her juvenile season, including a brace of wins on the all-weather at Kempton. She improved on that over this C&D on her reappearance last month when finishing close third of eight in a decent handicap, despite having pulled quite hard early on. Since that, DI FEDE opened her account on turf when landing a conditions race at Leicester (7f, good) and despite being on a career-high mark for this competitive event, Richard Kingscote’s mount can improve again and outrun odds of 16/1 in this big field.
17:35 Duke Of Edinburgh – Clear Skies
It isn’t too often we can put forward the axis of Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore at odds of 20/1, so CLEAR SKIES is worth chancing here, despite the need for some improvement. The daughter of Sea The Stars was hugely progressive over the winter on the all-weather and comes into this off the back of her best turf run, when second in Listed company at Gowran Park (1m1½f, good) behind Turret Rocks last month. The third home was a comfortable next-time-out winner in Listed class and now stepped up in trip on a decent surface it shouldn’t come as a shock if CLEAR SKIES produces a career-best on the big stage.
