Those looking forward to the horse races at Epsom Downs Racecourse this week will be disappointed to know that they will no longer be happening.

The racecourse confirmed that the event which had been planned on Thursday (September 13) will be abandoned.

The reason for its decision, it stated, was that chafer grubs are impacting areas of the racing surface.

If you have bought a ticket, you will receive an automatic full refund to the card used for payment, the racecourse promised. Meanwhile, hospitality guests will be contacted by phone.

Andrew Cooper, clerk of the Course at Epsom Downs Racecourse, said: “We’re very disappointed to lose the fixture. This is a problem that can arise overnight and was identified earlier today during a routine walk of the course ahead of racing on Thursday.

“We immediately contacted the BHA Senior Inspector of Courses, Richard Linley, who inspected the course late afternoon. We agreed it was necessary on safety grounds to abandon this week’s racing.

“We will immediately commence remedial works on the affected areas and in due course review the raceability of this season’s one remaining fixture on September 30.”

Though you will not be able to see the races at Epsom Downs this week, all members will be able to gain free entry to either the Friday (September 14) or Wednesday (September 19) fixtures at Sandown Park.
