Georgetown Police Department
SCOTT COUNTY, Ky (LEX 18) – The Georgetown Police Department is working with the equine community to have officers on horses patrolling their downtown area. They plan to reach that goal by auctioning off pieces of horse racing history.
The bidding begins Tuesday for the Georgetown Police Department’s online auction. The equine community in central Kentucky donated a handful of iconic pieces for the auction including horseshoes worn at Churchill Downs, the halters that adorned American Pharoah, Silver Charm, and other champions.
“Our goal is to be able to have horses patrolling downtown, and have people come up to us, interact with us, and see that we are human,” said Sgt Darin Allgood.
Statewide, the Commonwealth has only three police jurisdictions with mounted units. Louisville, The Horse Park’s Department, and Lexington. Funding for it is tight, so they hope is that an auction can help the department meet some of the financial goals needed.
“It’s an excellent PR tool. we’ve already been contacted by schools, other organizations who want to have out mounted units at their events,” said Assistant Chief Robert Swanigan.
The auction runs from Tuesday, May 1 through May 7.
