HIT the jackpot with LAGOSTOVEGAS in the Northumberland Plate (2.05).

Newcastle’s marathon looks the ideal challenge for Willie Mullins’ stayer who was an impressive winner of the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting.

The six-year-old has few miles on the clock and has done nothing but improve in long-distance races on the level.

Lagostovegas was a sixth length winner at Royal Ascot

She was third in the Cesarewitch last season before taking an unwise drop in distance for a Listed race at Naas. She showed her class by managing to finish second there over a trip that’s way short of her best.

She had a fair winter over hurdles where she went close in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. If you can handle the hustle and bustle of that, a field of 20 handicappers around Newcastle will be like a walk in the park.

It’s easy to forget that she only joined the all-conquering Mullins yard this time last year and he’s still improving this six-year-old. Another nice prize awaits here.

Withhold finished ahead of Lagostovegas in the Ces and has every chance again. But prices around the 3-1 mark seem a bit silly for this puzzler, especially coming back from nine months off.

Amazing Red has a good draw and is in cracking form after winning at Newmarket last time out. Trainer Ed Dunlop has his horses in good nick and Jim Crowley’s mount has strong claims under a penalty.

Natural Scenery has been called a few names because she has plenty of ability but doesn’t always show it. She ran some good races at handicap level in Dubai this spring before finding Group races a bit much. Her record around Newcastle catches the eye with two wins and a second — in last year’s running of this race. She’s 2lb lower in the weights today which gives her a chance, despite a wide draw.

Higher Power finished a place ahead of the Godolphin runner 12 months ago and should make his presence felt again.

DAVY’S DILEMMA can go close in the Plate consolation race (1.30).

He looks a stayer to follow after a promising third on his comeback at Doncaster last month. He was beaten a neck over an extended 1m6f and gives the impression that this longer distance will be ideal. Michael Dods’ runner has improved every time he’s gone up in trip and could be a couple of steps ahead of the handicapper.

Financial Conduct is another progressive stayer who is tackling this longer distance for the first time. He gets a big tick because he acts so well on the all-weather surface at Dundalk where he’s won three of his past four races.

He’s been hiked 9lb for his last win in Ireland and it will be interesting to see how he goes on this debut for David Simcock. Any improvement would put him right in the picture.

There are several in-form stayers lining up and it would be no surprise to see Euchen Glen or The Grand Visir take this hike in class in their stride.

ELLHEIDI can go one better than her debut by winning Newmarket’s 1.10.

She had the notebooks out when beaten a neck first time out at Haydock 17 days ago. She impressed with the way she travelled there and kept going right to the line over the 6f distance.

Wizard Of Odds’ tips for ITV

1.1o Newmarket – Ellheidi: ‘Notebooks were out on debut and she won’t have to find much more here’ (add to your betslip)

1.30 Newcastle – Davy’s Dilemma: ‘Should be suited by this longer trip and ran a blinder on return’ (add to your betslip)

2.05 Newcastle – Lagostovegas: ‘Ascot winner will thrive in the hustle and bustle of competitive handicap’ (add to your betslip)

The time of the race was decent and she wouldn’t have to find a lot more to get off the mark in this good company. Impulsion looks the main danger after running away with her debut at Goodwood earlier this month.

The ground was on the soft side that day but, if she handles these quicker conditions, she could be hard to beat.

Beechwood Izzy needs to show more than when winning well last time out at Thirsk. But it was a good effort and there could well be a lot more to come.
