A father was killed when a car crashed into the horse and cart he  was racing on a dual carriageway, witnesses said.

Mikey Connors, 32, below, died after the incident in Thamesmead on Saturday.

The driver of the car, a man aged 30, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The horse was badly injured and has been put down by a vet.

Mr Connors’s  family revealed he had been racing his horse Big T. Simey Connors, the victim’s brother, wrote on Facebook: “My heart is in bits over you … I saw you lying on the ground I ran over and got on my knees to beg Jesus and Mary for you to be OK.”

Friend Danny Cassius-Connor told the Standard: “He was a talented boxer and singer, but his passion was horses. You couldn’t meet a better father or family man.”

Competitive road racing, or trotting, is a popular pastime for the travelling community.
