WILL a first ever Classic be enough for Donnacha O’Brien to win the Stobart Jockey Of The Month award?
O’Brien won the QIPCO 2000 Guineas at Newmarket aboard Saxon Warrior on Saturday 5th May, beating fancied horses such as Masar, Elarqam, Roaring Lion and stablemate Gustav Klimt.
This was O’Brien’s first Group 1 win and he followed in the footsteps of older brother Joseph in winning a Group 1 race, showing maturity that belied his younger years with an educated ride.
The 19-year-old was pleased to hear he was nominated for the award and urged fans to vote for him.
O’Brien said: “It’s a huge honour to be nominated for May’s Stobart Jockey of the Month prize. There are a lot of top jockeys racing in England at the moment so I’m delighted to be in the final three!
“It would be fantastic to win and would round off a memorable month for me. I would be hugely grateful to anyone who votes for me!
“I thought Saxon Warrior had a good chance before the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, we weren’t 100 percent sure on his fitness but we were confident of running him very close.
“His work at home in the weeks leading up to the race was very impressive and he looked in incredible condition on the day too.
“He travelled beautifully as soon as the fences opened and he got a foothold in the race early on.
There were concerns that the distance of a mile in the race would be too short for him but he just took off at exactly the right time. Everything went very smoothly after that.
“After the race there was mainly a sense of relief! He’s a very good horse and it was a fantastic opportunity to ride him. Obviously Ryan (Moore) was at the Kentucky Derby with Mendelssohn so my dad showed a lot of faith in me to give me the ride on Saxon Warrior.
“Thankfully it all went to plan on the day I’m glad I could repay the faith my dad had shown in me by winning the race for him.”
