THE favourite Marmelo scraped home under Ryan Moore to win a thrilling renewal of the Grand Cup at York.
The Hughie Morrison-trained five-year-old looked likely to win easily over a furlong out, but Weekender rallied bravely under Frankie Dettori to make the winner fight all the way to the line.
Result of the 3.00 at York:
- 1st Marmelo 11-8f
- 2nd Weekender 2-1
- 3rd Duretto 18-1
Where did the favourite finish?
Marmelo showed a willing attitude on ground that was quicker than ideal to score by a neck in the £50,000 feature race – setting a new course record in the process.
